More than ever individual’s immigration status, right to work and identity is coming under the media spotlight; the catering sector is particularly at risk with a large proportion of its workers typically coming from abroad.
Caterer and Hotelkeeper’s recent articles ‘Five Quaglino’s Staff Arrested After Raid’ (19 January 2006) and ‘Whose Job Is It to Spot Illegal Workers?’ (2 February 2006) highlight the government trend to push responsibility for checking employee’s right to work down to employers. Should employers engage illegal workers and fail to defend themselves properly they run the risk of a £5,000 fine per illegal worker (i).
In early 2005 the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), (the body representing the recruitment industry (ii)) introduced the REC Audited award. Welcomed by the DTI, REC Audited is the most comprehensive regulatory audit of its kind, demonstrating those businesses that attain the award operates to the highest possible legal and ethical standards.
Agency-Services.com, a young start-up company, specializing in supplying staff to the catering industry is one of the first Employment Businesses in the U.K. to apply for and obtain the REC Audited award, to date less than two percent (iii) of REC members have this.
On obtaining REC Audited status the founder of Agency-Services.com commented “With an estimated 7.5% of Britain’s born abroad (iv) and the latest survey showing nearly 1.8 million of these people living in London (v), clearly the legality of workers is an issue requiring attention and something no employer can afford to ignore.”
“Agency-Services.com has taken the lead to ensure we provide all our clients with peace of mind, REC Audited means we’ve proven we work to the highest ethical and legal standards leaving our clients to concentrate on what they do best, running their business”.
